What is a sugar skull filter?

Día de Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition held on November 1 and 2, when families remember the people they have lost. Homes and graves get an ofrenda, an altar with photos, candles, food and bright orange marigolds, under strings of papel picado. Calaveras, decorated skulls, are part of it, and so is La Catrina, the elegant skeleton lady in a wide hat first drawn by the printmaker José Guadalupe Posada in the early 1900s.

Painting your face as a calavera, with flowers around the eyes and patterns on the forehead and chin, is a way of joining the celebration. A sugar skull filter does that from one photo, as Day of the Dead makeup AI: the prompt asks for paint that looks real, not a mask, and keeps your face shape, hairstyle, skin tone and outfit. It is a celebration of remembrance, so it is written warm and colorful, not as a horror look.

How to write a sugar skull makeup prompt

Describe the paint step by step: white base, black eye sockets, flowers around the eyes, dots on the forehead and chin.
Ask for “looks like real face paint”, so it reads as makeup on your skin, not a mask.
Add the tradition’s colors: orange marigolds, candles, papel picado.
Keep the face shape, hairstyle, skin tone and outfit from the photo.
Keep the tone warm: flowers and candlelight, not blood or gore.

Is this Catrina makeup?

It is the calavera face paint that Catrina makeup is built on. For the full Catrina look, add an elegant wide hat with flowers and a lace collar to the prompt.

Is it a scary filter?

No. The prompt asks for flowers, color and candlelight, as the celebration is: it is about remembering, not horror.
